Best Time to Travel to Sapa

By

Sapa is one of the most iconic places in Northern Vietnam. It’s dramatic scenery perfected by a series of rice paddies, stupendous waterfalls, and the notable colorful ethnic group sets that paint the markets. When is the best time to travel to Sapa to relish its beauty to its full potential?

Due to this place location, the temperatures are averagely mild at 15-18 C. Locals say they can even have a taste of the four seasons in just one day – refreshing spring in the morning, laid back afternoon basking under the sun, cool fall at the height of twilight and intense chill at the peak of the night.

June – August Summer

These months are the warm summer days in Sapa with temperatures at 20C. It is good to note that summer in most places in the northern parts of Vietnam means rain. Prepare for some scattered rain should your trip fall into these months.

The rain can be short and brief but expect a downpour everytime. Sapa offers refuge from scorching summer heat too, thanks to its geographical location. With this, Sapa is usually crowded with tourists during these months.

Want to skip the crowds? Visit Sapa at the end of May and the first week of June. There are several drizzles but are not heavy pouring and the weather is best for exploring the city.

September – October Fall

The best time to explore Sapa at its might is during these months of fall. This is typically the harvest time for farmers as this is when the rice is ripped – turning each paddies into sultry yellow (definitely Instagram worthy photos!) Temperature is also mild with lots of sunshine to warm your trekking trips!

November – January Winter

Winter in Sapa can go as low as 1 C at night and 8 C during the daytime. It is ideal to arrange an accommodation with installed heaters to warm you on these chilly nights should you ever decide to travel to Sapa during these months.

Fogs flood the mountain ranges of Sapa with a whisk of light snowfalls. The most magical time of the day during winter in Sapa is at sunrise when the sun sits atop of the mysterious fogs creating a breathtaking aesthetic.

March – May Spring

Expect an explosion of color at the mountains of Sapa as this is the time wherein wild flowers come into full bloom and when new rice are planted on the rice paddies.

The temperature averages at 16 C and light to no showers at all to welcome the morning. The mountain fog has also calmed down during this time leaving a stunning view of the picturesque grandeur of Sapa’s mountain.
