Halong Bay Vietnam

Best Time to Travel to Halong

By

Halong sits in the Northern part of Vietnam approximately 156km away from the capital Hanoi. Thus, Hanoi and Halong have similar weather.
Both share the same weather – typical humid and tropical monsoon. While South Vietnam has generally rainy and dry seasons. Halong has 4 seasons with its own unique features.

January – February: Winter Magics

During this time, Halong Bay experiences an average temperature of 13-20 C. An ideal temperature for a laid back ambience. There is sunlight during the day but most of the time, you will notice a sea of fog engulfing most of the areas and random drizzle in the morning and late in the afternoon.

Expect a completely different vibe and feel of the Halong Bay when you visit during these months. The rock formations seem like floating above the fog – creating a fading effect.

Compared to other months, Halong has less visitors during these months and you also get a chance to experience Lunar New Year – the most significant holiday in Vietnam.

March – May: Spring and New Beginnings

The weather is generally not scorchingly warm but the average temperature is 24 C. It is more likely to rain during March and humidity starts to increase too.

Despite this, the weather is perfect for a sunny day outdoor activity with family and friends such as kayaking. However, deciding to visit Halong in March is a great time to avoid the peak season.

Note that at the end of April you will sort of experience an increase of crowd due to the Hung Kings Temple Festival and Reunification Day.

June – September: Storm in Summer

The humidity in Halong can be a bit bothersome to some tourists but an overall perfect travel experience for globetrotters seeking to find emerald water and superb rock formations. There is light scattered rain however, most days are perfectly warm and sunny – like how summer getaways must be!

It is also ideal weather for general water activities such as but not limited to swimming, kayaking and cruising.

The average temperature is at 29-32 C so you can swim your heart out. There is a higher chance of scattered rain in the month of August but don’t fret, it doesn’t last long.

October – December: The Fall Peak Season

The weather during these months are generally pleasant due to a considerable drop of the humidity in the area. Temperature is averaging at 13 – 21 C.

There is also less rainfall during this time and expect cloudy weather by the end of December.

Visitors can enjoy the best of sunshine as it is not scorchingly hot but it is good to note that this is the peak season in Halong. Should you find yourself wanting to try squid fishing, these are the best months to catch those big squids.
